American Bar Association Assists Military Families

David Bordoni has worked as a NY-based trial attorney for nearly 25 years. In his work, he represents Fortune 500 companies in legal matters involving construction law. David Bordoni is a member of the New York State Bar Association and the American Bar Association (ABA).

In addition to providing a range of professional development programs for practicing attorneys, the American Bar Association oversees various resources and initiatives to help the public navigate the legal system. One of these is the Legal Assistance for Military Personnel (LAMP) initiative, which facilitates the delivery of legal services to military members and their families.

A major component of LAMP is the ABA Military Pro Bono Project, a venture that connects attorneys and law firms with active-duty military personnel facing civil legal issues. The project is open to financially eligible servicemembers who receive a case referral from military attorneys. Some of the legal areas in which servicemembers can receive assistance include consumer law, housing law, and family law. Another feature of the Project is Operation Stand-By, a resource that provides attorney-to-attorney guidance for pro-bono and military lawyers.

The ABA's LAMP Committee also played a lead role in creating ABA Home Front. This online resource provides a directory featuring state-by-state listings of legal programs and services that specialize in helping military families. Home Front also includes an information center where military families can learn about a variety of legal issues.

More information about LAMP and related programs and services is available at www.americanbar.org/groups/legal_assistance_military_personnel.
